Parenting is not for the faint of heart—especially if we’re talking about parenting toddlers! At this stage, your child starts to show her unique personality and to develop interests and preferences. It may be a newfound obsession with “princess” like dresses and hair accessories, or it may be an endearing habit, like singing to her mommy each morning. You may also begin to notice that these wonderful qualities come with ones that are pretty challenging! Toddlers are famous for throwing tantrums and demanding things like baby gifts. Here are some things to prepare your for parenting your toddler.

She will demand your undivided attention. She will want you by her side all day long! She will follow you around as you go about the household chores and will want to be a part of everything you do. It sure is nice to be at the center of someone's universe, but it can also be exhausting!

She can be highly egocentric. At this age, she has not yet learned how to be considerate of other people’s thoughts and feelings. It will be all about her, her, her. Her baby gifts, her story time, her favorite TV shows, her play time. But don’t worry, according to child development experts, a toddler's self-centeredness is part of developing a strong sense of self. That does not mean that you should keep giving in to all of her whims and fancies. She needs to know that there are limits.

She has a limited attention span. One of the things you notice about your toddler is that she does not stick with one task for very long. She is likely to shift from one activity to another. She may be engrossed with her hair clip collection one minute, and singing along to her favorite children’s shows the next.

She is fiercely independent. Toddlers are only beginning to truly see the world around them. They want to discover this new world and they usually want to explore on their own. Whether or not they're prepared to admit it, they need your help and guidance. This guidance may not always be welcome, but it’s a necessary part of the plan.

She is easily frustrated. At this tender age, her abilities simply can't keep pace with her ambition and curiosity. She is determined to look like a fairy of the forest but can’t put on her flower hair accessories properly, so she becomes enraged. Though easily frustrated, toddlers are extraordinarily persistent, which is one reason they learn so fast.

She follows her own “clock.” Your toddler is not yet aware that adults have schedules to follow. She operates on her own time. It can either be extremely fast (like when she is magnetically pulled toward a dangerous object) or painfully slow (like when she insists on choosing a dress and then dressing herself). She isn't the least bit worried about whether you’re late for work or that you have a pile of laundry to finish. Trying to rush her will only be frustrating for you both. So chill out, relax, and cherish the precious moments of re-discovering the world through your toddler’s eyes.

One minute, your happy go lucky daughter is playing dress-up with her friends, giddily switching hair accessories as she completes her outfit . The next, she is screaming at the top of her lungs and throwing her toys around. You have just experienced another tantrum, courtesy of your little one.

Parenting doesn’t seem complete unless you have been through the dreaded toddler tantrum. For some, it’s one of the major hurdles in parenting. Once you have gone through it and mastered it, especially the public tantrums, you can practically brave anything!

Do you need help figuring out how to deal with your little one’s emotional outbursts? Here are tips to tame the tantrum:

Get mad. That’s for your daughter, not for you. Give her permission to be angry. Even toddlers do not like to feel rejected, denied, or cut off. Anger is an emotion, just like love and happiness, and it’s a healthy one to work through. It's the negative accompanying behavior that you must try to eliminate. For example, if your daughter is in the middle of an angry outburst over a baby item her friend did not share with her, you can try telling her "It's okay to feel angry, but it’s not good to hit."

Talk through it. It will help alleviate your daughter’s anger if you put it into words. It lets her know that you understand what she is thinking and feeling. For instance, if she gets upset because you won't buy her a baby gift she sees at the toy store, tell her "I know you want that toy. I see that you're mad because I won't buy it for you." By saying this, she will feel like she's being heard and understood. Eventually she'll learn from this example and verbally communicate her feelings as well, instead of resorting to screaming, hitting, or throwing things.

If she gets physical… In the meantime, if she expresses her frustration with physical actions like pulling out her hair accessories or throwing her toys around, calmly stop her and say, firmly, "No. It's not okay to break things." If you must, gently pick her up and move her away from the situation, or to a place where she can't break anything. Let her cool down before you continue addressing her behavior. Be aware that at this age, kicking, hitting and biting are developmentally appropriate behaviors.

Stick together. It may be tempting to walk away and just allow your daughter to blow off steam, but it’s actually more helpful if you stay with her while she’s attempting to dissipate these overwhelming feelings. Being close to her while she's crying and screaming will provide her with emotional protection.

Distract her. You can usually sense it if your daughter’s emotions are beginning to heighten. The secret? Before the meltdown happens, distract her! You can engage her in a fun activity (like playing dress-up in her favorite dress and hair accessories) or point out something interesting to look at (the mailman walking outside, the dogs walking by, the birds perched on trees). This will give your toddler’s mind a chance to refocus on something more pleasant, or at least less frustrating.

Miss Newman, who portrayed the younger Miley Cyrus on Disney’s mammoth hit series “Hannah Montana”, loves the No Slippy clips® and headbands, and wears them both on and off screen.

Modeling for No Slippy® last year was an ideal way for Miss Newman to show her support of family friend Annie Salyer, No Slippy’s CEO and President, who couldn’t be more pleased.

“When I met Ryan & her mother Jodi in Los Angeles, they shared with me how Ryan could never find anything that would stay put in her hair. As soon as Ryan tried on a clip, she was simply amazed! Ryan’s become a huge No Slippy® fan because, as Jodi explained, ‘they’re the only clips that stay put in her hair.’

One thing led to another, and the next thing I knew, Ryan graciously made herself available for the No Slippy Hair Clippy® Fall ’09 catalogue photo shoot. She was a delight to work with – an absolute gem – and the photos are magnificent.”

Miss Newman was featured throughout the No Slippy Hair Clippy® Fall 2008 catalog, sporting the No Slippy® classic Zoey Princess Bow® hairclip in white, the Felicia clip in lavender, the Julie butterfly French hair clip, and a No Slippy® flower headband.

In addition to her featured role on “Hannah Montana”, Newman also plays Carlotta in the comedy feature film “Lower Learning” starring Jason Biggs and Eva Longoria Parker. Now just shy of 11 years old, Ryan Newman entered the entertainment industry at the age of three. At the ripe old age of seven, the young actress made her film debut in two films in one summer —“Zoom” and “Monster House”--both from

Sony Pictures. In the comedy “Zoom”, Ryan co-starred opposite Tim Allen, Courtney Cox, and Chevy Chase. Ryan then joined an all-star cast in the Steven Spielberg film “Monster House” that included Steve Buscemi, Nick Cannon, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Kevin James, Jason Lee, and Catherine O'Hara. Ryan resides in Southern California with her mom, dad, and older sister Jessica.

Adds Salyer, “We welcome the opportunity to continue to provide Ryan with as many No Slippy® products as her precious heart, and gorgeous hair, desire!”

No Slippy Hair Clippy® is well known for creating the non-slip hair accessories® category, and is regarded as the premier hair accessories company for girls of all ages.

Our first “no-slip hair clip” was invented out of sheer frustration in 2000. It took a mom with an almost-bald baby girl to invent a hair clip that would stay securely in place and look cute. For countless generations, baby girls have often been mistaken for boys until No Slippy Hair Clippy® opened its doors in 2001. Back then, you couldn’t find a hair accessory created specifically to stay in baby-fine hair.

Our hair clips are quite unique, with a patent pending. Originally designed with a magnet to enhance the hold, we now use a more expensive plush Swiss velvet wrapped completely around the metal clip that provides an identical snug, secure grip. It’s now lighter weight, and so soft she won’t even know it’s there! Our clips won’t hurt if she pulls them out, and because we use the highest quality clips available, they won’t bend easily and are more durable. Truly the world’s finest non-slip clip®!

Over time, we have continued to grow and to add new products, and we now design hair accessories for girls, teens and women, as well as babies. We offer three different sizes and types of clips; a Mini, a Standard Pinch, and a French Clip for girls of all ages with lots of hair. All are non-slip clips®, and won’t slide in fine hair of any length. We also offer no-slip headbands, including an organic cotton head wrap, the first of its kind!

No Slippy Hair Clippy® has been nominated every year since 2005 by retailers across America for the prestigious “Earnie” award for design excellence, and took home the prize in 2008! No Slippy® clips and headbands are also a celebrity favorite, photographed often in Hollywood and around the world on both celebrities and their children.

And now (because we can’t help setting trends), our new line of Clipettes,™ featuring modern grosgrain ribbon prints & bows, is making its debut as a value-based division of No Slippy Hair Clippy®. Check out our amazing selection at www.hairclippy.com.

She’s spending hours in the bathroom, sizing herself up every time she passes a mirror….. Sound familiar? It’s just another normal day for your teenage daughter.

During their teenage years, it is normal for kids to become more interested in appearances—both their own and others'. During this period in their lives, their bodies go through big changes. As they change physically, they become more aware of how they look. And with this new awareness comes a change in body image.

Having a healthy body image is important because it generates positive feelings and opinions which can affect our overall attitude. Acceptance and appreciation for our bodies ends up meaning more than just being satisfied with our appearance.

Of course, this can be easier said than done, especially in a society that has ruthless standards for beauty. Fashion trends shift quickly. Romantic, sophisticated hair accessories may be all the rage among celebrities now, but not too long ago, people who wore such hair accessories were seen as old-fashioned.

More often than not, teens end up feeling that they cannot catch up or measure up. They become too self-critical about appearance. It's true that appearance isn't everything, but feeling satisfied with appearance means a lot because a poor body image can ultimately hurt overall self-image.

O f course your daughter is special just the way she is, but if you're wondering why she suddenly seems so focused on appearances, here are a few things to keep in mind:

Her new reflection. The time she spends grooming, making a fuss over which dress to wear, and which headband to pair it with, or comparing herself to friends and celebrities, can be ways of getting to know the new self she sees reflected in the mirror.

Her fashion statement. She’s making a statement about herself when she expresses her taste in clothes, hair accessories and make-up. Experimenting with her styles is one way to express her personality and identity.

Her way to belong. Finding a group to belong to plays a major a role in heightening your young teen’s concern about appearances. If you notice her suddenly wearing a girly hair clip or dressing differently, this is probably her way of discovering how she fits in.

Developing a healthy body image happens over time. A number of factors can influence it: her experiences, the opinions of others and cultural messages. As she tries to find herself in this new world of raging hormones, you can help by being accepting and supportive, while at the same time encouraging other qualities that keep looks in perspective.

Accept. It is important to recognize that being concerned about looks is a normal, natural part of the teen years. It might be frustrating when she holds fort in the bathroom for hours, but avoid criticizing her for being concerned about appearances. As she matures and learns to put things in perspective, she will eventually get over this concern.

Compliment. Reassure her not just about her looks, but also about her other important qualities. Even a simple “That hair clip is so cute with that dress” can mean a lot. But make sure to also compliment her on other physical attributes, like grace, speed, balance and strength.

What’s inside counts, too. Tell her what personal qualities you love about her—how caring she is to her siblings, how determined she is when studying for her tests, or how supportive she is of her friends. Reassure her when she expresses insecurity.

Set boundaries. While it is important to be patient and supportive, you are still the parent and you are still in charge. Set boundaries on how much time she can spend on grooming, dressing and deciding which hair accessories bring out the color of her eyes. Tell her it's not OK to inconvenience others or let chores go. Limits like these can help her develop time management, being considerate of others, exercising self-discipline, and keeping appearances in perspective.

Be a good role model. Young minds are very impressionable, and your daughter is no exception. She is very likely to mirror what she sees, and it is important to realize that how you talk about your own looks sets a powerful example. If you yourself are constantly complaining about your appearance, you may be teaching her that it’s OK to cast the same critical eye on herself.

One look is all it takes: your little aspiring fashionista is experimenting with clothes again.

Watching your daughter dress up by her self is always a great source of entertainment. But this seemingly cute moment is actually an important life skill that can foster independence and encourage logical thinking. These are two important traits that will help her grow into a self-assured adult.

Teaching your daughter how to dress up may not seem important or urgent, but now is the perfect time to add it to your parenting “to do” list.

Decisions, Decisions

Your child has not yet mastered the “art of dressing up,” so she will need you to guide her. Give her options, but in the end, allow her to select what she wants to wear. Too many choices will overwhelm her, so limit the choices to only two or three outfits. Give her options of what hair accessories she wants to pair her outfit with as well. Once she has chosen an outfit and hair accessories, lay the selected pieces neatly on a chair so she can easily reach them the next morning.

Poster Child

Make a “morning routine poster” that illustrates what she needs to do to get dressed everyday. Here’s an idea: draw separate columns on a poster board and then sketch a picture of each clothing item. If you’re not the artistic type, you can take snapshots of the clothing pieces and then tape them on the poster board. Put the drawings or snapshots in logical order for your child to follow. For example, the pink dress first, then the socks, then shoes, plus her favorite flower hair clip. Hang it in a spot where she can easily see it.

Early Birds

Since she is just beginning to learn how to dress up on her own, brace yourself for a little frustration and a little chaos. Wake up earlier to give your daughter extra time to get ready. Also, try not to step in too quickly to help her. Give her enough time to figure things out on her own.

Baby Steps

Start simple with clothes and hair accessories that are easy for her to put on. Garments with snaps, zippers and buttons might be complicated at first, since she is only beginning to gain control over her small muscles. Avoid them in the mean time. For example, it will be easier in the beginning for her to slip on pants with elastic waist bands or put headbands on her hair. She can graduate to more intricate clothing items once she starts getting the hang of it. The same goes for shoes. Opt for shoes with velcro straps and save the ones with shoelaces for when your child learns to dress herself without struggling.

Curb Criticism

It may seem simple, but learning to dress up on her own is challenging for a child. It won’t make things any easier or simpler if you become critical. Saying things like “Your shirt is buttoned wrong” or “That’s the wrong hair clip for that outfit” can devalue your child’s efforts and reduce her self-esteem. Expect that there will be mistakes and imperfections. Gently guide her to correct these while offering plenty of encouragement and honest praise for her efforts.

We all love children for their rich imaginations. Just try watching them play dress-up: they can be a princess, a fairy, a pirate, or a superhero. Once they get into it, their imaginations transform them into whatever they want to be, and transport them wherever they want to go.

Before you know it, your darling daughter is donning her frilly pink dress, her flower hair clips, and perhaps your favorite pumps that are way too big for her, pretending that she is the fairy of the forest. While it may seem like just another cute moment to you, when your child dons those fairy wings and glittery hair accessories, she is actually developing in ways beyond this dress-up.

According to child psychologists, dress-up play is vital to a child’s development. It fosters a child’s imaginative processes and allows for experimentation and fantasy. It also gives you a peek into your child’s mind and can reveal possible inner conflicts, depending on the role that your child plays and how she expresses it.

For Dr. Keith Kanner, licensed clinical child, adolescent, and adult psychologist, “Play is symbolic of and used for psychological growth and is the child’s way of practicing new ways of understanding their minds, relationships, and the world around them.” Additionally, you can observe three new developmental themes in dress-up play: the identification of gender roles, the growing and changing of interpersonal relationships, and the development of conscience.

Gender identification, for example, may be displayed by a little girl putting on her pretty hair accessories and dressing up as a princess, or borrowing grown-up clothes from your closet and pretending to be a school teacher. Since children are very impressionable, they are most likely to mimic their parents. The development of personal relationships may be displayed when your child “plays house” with her friends, where they each play multiple roles. For example, as husband and wife, and also mother and father. As for the development of conscience, observe when your child’s dress-up play has rules by which she has to abide. This will demonstrate your child’s conscience in formation.

You can promote your child’s development by encouraging dress-up play. Simply create an instant wardrobe for your imaginative little tot! Here are several items that you may already have at hand and won’t have you running to different clothes stores or baby boutiques.

A bath towel can become a cape, a turban, or table cloth.

A flimsy skirt can become a fancy dress or a bride’s veil.

Hair accessories of all kinds can help make important accents.

For the little man of the house, a tool belt can be a holster.

For the glamorous little girl, sunglasses can add extra glitz and sparkly beads can be used as jewelry.

And go ahead, bring out the Halloween costumes!

So think twice before throwing out old clothes, hair accessories or even baby gifts that you no longer use. They may have served their purpose for you, but in your child’s eyes, they may be treasure troves of new adventures. Importantly, they might even help her become a unique, confident, and well-balanced adult.

Salyer actually stumbled on the no-slip velvet clip while making a call to one of her accounts in the San Francisco Bay Area. “I really liked the product and the thought that was put into it. But like so many start ups, there wasn’t enough capital to support the business, and it seemed eminent during the early days that No Slippy Hair Clippy was not going to make it,” she says. “I convinced my husband, Ramey, that if we invested, we could make something important happen in the marketplace.”

With a combined business savvy, strong industry contacts, some money and a great deal of commitment, she and Ramey invested and formed a partnership with the original owner, and co-founded a whole new successful business venture. From the very beginning, Salyer knew No Slippy Hair Clippy was going to be different. “It’s about our name … it makes people smile and want to say it out loud. I knew we had something marketable and cute,” she says.

But expanding and shaping the business turned out to be more challenging than the couple thought.

In the summer of 2005, Sayler learned her co-founder had committed fraud and embezzled funds from the company.

Salyer credits No Slippy Hair Clippy’s loyal retailers for keeping the company afloat through some of its most trying days. She found herself digging deep to remember her inspiration for initially becoming involved with the brand. “I truly fell in love with the hair clips, the quality, the ingenuity, the uniqueness,” she remembers. “I still love seeing babies wear them because they really stay in their baby fine hair. I just 100 percent believed in the product right from the start.”

The No Slippy team has catapulted the company to success. Since 2005, it has been nominated every year by retailers across the United States for the prestigious Earnshaw’s Earnie award, in recognition of design excellence,. In 2008, the brand won the award. “In today’s climate, we have to be focused and realistic,” Sayler notes. “Our marketing efforts have given us a higher perceived value and have contributed to our branding efforts.” She regularly gives a shout-out to her photographer, Amanda Elkins, who is responsible for lifestyle images and Don Corning, who shoots the products in studio. “Our designers and photographers are essential to the overall look and feel of our brand,” she says, “and I believe this has clearly set us apart from other companies in the category.”

The company has grown exponentially since the early days, and moving the business globally into export markets and expanding Internet business and marketing has proven to be effective.
